Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and mental health disorders are closely linked, with psychological distress often exacerbating cardiac conditions and influencing recovery outcomes (World Health Organization [WHO], 2024). Depression, anxiety, and stress are common among cardiac patients, increasing the risk of poor adherence to treatment, slower rehabilitation, and higher mortality rates (Olumide et al., 2024). Integrating mental health nursing into cardiac care is an emerging approach aimed at addressing the psychological well-being of patients while managing their cardiovascular health (Adeyemi & Johnson, 2023).
In high-income countries, the incorporation of mental health interventions—such as cognitive behavioral therapy, stress management, and emotional support—into cardiac rehabilitation has led to improved patient outcomes, including lower readmission rates and enhanced quality of life (Eze & Mohammed, 2023). However, in Nigeria, particularly in Bauchi State, mental health services are often underdeveloped and not fully integrated into routine cardiac care (Bassey et al., 2024). Given the burden of CVDs and mental health comorbidities in Nigeria, there is a need to explore the impact of integrating mental health nursing into cardiac care on patient outcomes.
Despite growing evidence highlighting the importance of mental health in cardiovascular care, many healthcare facilities in Nigeria do not incorporate structured mental health nursing into cardiac care programs (Adebayo & Omoniyi, 2023). Cardiac patients experiencing psychological distress often do not receive adequate mental health support, leading to poor adherence to treatment regimens and delayed recovery (Ogunleye et al., 2023).
In Bauchi State, the lack of trained mental health nurses and limited resources for psychological support pose significant barriers to the effective integration of mental health into cardiac care. This study aims to assess whether integrating mental health nursing into cardiac care improves patient outcomes, including adherence to medication, emotional well-being, and overall cardiac rehabilitation success.
This study will focus on cardiac patients receiving care in selected hospitals in Bauchi State and assess the impact of mental health nursing interventions. The study may be limited by factors such as variations in hospital policies, the availability of mental health professionals, and differences in patient psychological responses.
